As a result of increasing demands by citizens to play a greater role in decision-making processes, facilitated by unprecedented advances in modern information and communication technologies, citizen engagement has been put on top of the agenda of local governments around the world. There are significant potential benefits to be had for governments that enhance citizen engagement such as gains in political legitimacy and improved quality and efficiency of service delivery. Our work in this field aims to stimulate effective and meaningful citizen engagement practices within local government in the Kingdom and encompasses topics such as community development, public opinion in planning processes, co-creation and crowdsourcing, citizen engagement of local and municipal councils, and women and youth participation in government.
